BOTRYTIS SEMILLON 2013

THE URN

BACKGROUND

All Heydon Estate wines are the product of single vineyards with fruit estate grown on our old Wilyabrup property in the heart of the Margaret River appellation.

This wine is 100% Semillon from our old block planted in 1988.

It has always been a passion of George’s to produce a Sauternes style Semillon which is not in the ilk of sticky Australian style sweet wines, but delicate and with a dryer finish. We are very proud of our 2006 wine.

The otherwise difficult vintage conditions in 2006, with cooler and often wet periods impeding ripening, were none the less ideal for the controlled bunch infection of the noble Botrytis cinerea mould, leading to sweetening and flavour concentration.

VIGNERON GEORGE HEYDON’S COMMENTS

The wine is a medium golden colour, brilliant.

The nose is hugely complex, with cumquat, marmalade and dried apricot, candied orange peel, and nutty characters of cashews.

The palate teases both sweet and bitter senses, and has been likened to lemon meringue pie. The palate is lively and fresh due to the acid structure which we believe will allow it to improve for 15 to 20 years. Careful French oak barrel maturation has produced a wine of balance and luscious complexity.
