All Heydon Estate wines are the product of single vineyards with fruit estate grown on our old Wilyabrup property in the heart of the Margaret River appellation.
This wine is 100% Mendoza clone from our old Chardonnay block.
The 2006 vintage in Margaret River was unusually cool and with frequent wet periods, impeding ripening and increasing disease control challenges. Whilst the later ripening reds suffered somewhat due to this, the slower ripening afforded the whites, and especially Chardonnay, allowed elegant and full flavour development.
An outstanding Chardonnay has been crafted, encapsulating the vineyard terroir and style parameters we strive for.
VIGNERON GEORGE HEYDON’S COMMENTS
A deep straw colour, brilliant.
The long, slow ripening period in vintage 2006 was ideal for Chardonnay. The wine has developed a complex nose of honey-dew, ripe stone fruits, lime characters and raw almonds.
The stone fruit flavours continue to the palate with apricot obvious. A mouth filling wine with excellent weight of flavour.
The judicious use of finest French oak barrels ensures a balanced, elegant wine, redolent of a Chablis style.
As always, our philosophy is to produce wines that excel with food.
The fruit was handpicked on 29th March 2006.
Fruit was whole bunch pressed and fermented in barrel, with a mix of natural and inoculated yeast strains. Battonage for 2 months. 10% was allowed to undergo malolactic ferment providing textural complexity.
Maturation for 10 months in 100% French oak barrels, 50% new and 50% second use.
