All Heydon Estate wines are the product of single vineyards with fruit estate grown on our old Wilyabrup property in the heart of the Margaret River appellation.
This wine is 100% Mendoza clone from our old Chardonnay block.
The 2009 vintage was terrific for Chardonnay with warm days and cool nights. Such is the quality and balance of our old Chardonnay block, full complex flavour development occurs whilst retaining the classical long acidity and elegance that “The Willow” is renowned for.
VIGNERON GEORGE HEYDON’S COMMENTS
A medium golden straw colour. The bright, complex nose opens with our characteristic rich tropical fruits, including nectarine, pears and hints of vanilla bean. Citrus blossom and layers of biscuity lees and toasty cashews, indicative of majestic use of finest French oak.
The intense palate shows all the linage of citrus and minerality, weight, subtle oak, citrus zest and length that “The Willow” is renowned for – redolent of classic White Burgundy.
The fruit was handpicked on 27th February 2009.
Fruit was whole bunch pressed and fermented in barrel, with wild, indigenous natural yeast strains. Battonage for 2 months. 10% was allowed to undergo malolactic ferment providing textural complexity.
Maturation for 10 months in 100% French oak barrels, 50% new and 50% second use.
